Let’s Make It Happen: Irony in Complexity

17/02/25
At Newton, a company celebrating its 25th anniversary, we have always believed that humor and satire are essential ingredients for navigating the daily challenges of business. In our environment, a smile is not just a response to workplace complexity but also a driver of creativity, helping us see things from new perspectives and find out-of-the-box solutions.
This was the core idea behind Satirazienda, a book written for Il Sole 24 Ore, exploring satire’s role in leadership and change management.
As Paolo Iacci highlights in his recent book L’ironia come strategia di lavoro (Irony as a Work Strategy, 2024), irony is a fundamental resource for tackling challenges, enhancing workplace creativity, and strengthening team resilience. An ironic outlook is an antidote to stress and mental rigidity, fostering adaptability and promoting a more dynamic, open work culture.
The ability to use irony can serve as an antidote to stress and mental rigidity. Iacci emphasizes how irony helps us to stay grounded in reality, but with a lighter perspective, without losing sight of one’s goals.
Those who can laugh at their own difficulties—without downplaying them—demonstrate a strong capacity for adaptation, a crucial trait in a work environment that often demands quick decision-making and the ability to handle unexpected situations. In a workplace where relationships are key to collective success, irony acts as a catalyst, breaking down barriers and fostering more open and direct communication. It helps ease tensions, defuse conflicts, and create a corporate culture based on mutual understanding. This resource can boost productivity, as a positive and stimulating environment encourages people to give their best.
Equally important is the connection between irony and resilience. Professional challenges, like personal ones, are inevitable, but the ability to face them with a smile—and a quick-witted remark—not only helps maintain high morale but also allows for a different, less overwhelming perspective on difficulties. Irony provides psychological distance, enabling individuals to observe problems from a “third position” with greater clarity, reducing anxiety and the paralyzing effect that uncertainty often brings. Companies can use irony in their communication solutions.
